Pikas in the Park
Anyone who hikes in the Rocky Mountain National Park area should keep an eye out for pikas, an adorable mammal that is commonly seen in the area. Haven’t been lucky enough to see them in the wild? You can also find them in downtown Estes Park and at the Art Center of Estes Park.
The Art Center has partnered with the city of Estes Park and Mike Dwyer Sculptures for the special Pikas in the Park project. Well-known Loveland sculptor Mike Dwyer was commissioned to sculpt 12 bronze picas, each one with a different composition and unique character. These were installed throughout Estes Park in 2017 as part of the town’s 100-year celebration. Individuals and families can participate in a unique, interactive scavenger hunt, by picking up a map at the Visitor Center, trying to find all the pikas, then coming to the Art Center of Estes Park to see them all together and to purchase their favorite.
According to Mike, “A fun aspect of the pikas is that they all have names. The Town of Estes Park chose the 12 names—all taken from historical Estes Park figures.” They are sculpted doing what pikas do in their natural Colorado Rocky Mountain habitat—climbing rocks, gathering grass, barking, running, sitting, and taking a nap. The bronze replicas of the pikas can only be purchased at the Art Center.
Mike’s limited edition bronze sculptures range from very detailed bald eagles to smooth, elegant mourning doves, and lifelike depictions of children interacting with nature. His realistic works of bronze can be found in both private and public collections throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, Europe, and Puerto Rico. He has been honored with both People's Choice and Juror's Awards.
